Welcome to Delden!
The city of Delden with around and about 7000 inhabitants is located close to the German border and belongs to the municipality of Hof van Twente. Due to its good location within the lush Twickel estate, Delden was pronounced “Europe’s Greenest City” in 1997.
The area of Delden/ Twickel is popular with both cyclists and walkers, as it offers a wide variety of tours with different difficulties. As an example, the European trail E11 (Marskramperpad) from den Haag (Netherlands) to the Polish border runs through the beautiful parks and gardens of Twickel.
The wide range and high quality of facilities has attracted professional football clubs to local sport hotels for their training camps. Furthermore, there is an award winning natural swimming pool which is hugely popular in the area due to its environmentally friendly concept and the attractive facilities.
Apart from its sporting locations, Delden offers a historical and therefore historically interesting inner city with small shops, musea, an interesting range of art galleries, cafés and hotels in all different price ranges. Even the Dutch Queen Beatrix came to spend a night here.
Delden is also of historical importance: The settlement received city status as soon as 1333 stadsrechten and has played a major role in the trading of salt throughout the centuries. The salt museum, in which you can learn everything about Delden’s impact on the salt industry, was opened by Queen Beatrix in 1985 in Delden’s former city hall.
Another important sight is Twickel castle, built in 1347, which offers beautiful parks, flourishing gardens and a must-see orangery. Further, the thatched frame houses with their beige and black shutters create a romantic sphere.
For people who long for urban entertainment, the lively city of Enschede offers extensive shopping experiences, people can visit the Football club FC Twente or the Rock-Pop- Museum in Gronau. Visitors can join a tour of Grolsch brewery, do wellness in Bad Bentheim or learn about Deventer‘ history and culture.
For all of these reasons, Delden is worth a visit!
